Ian, the founder of Property Refit Ltd., originally trained as a furniture designer and spent over 10 years running a fitted, painted furniture workshop, before going on to spend a further eight years as a kitchen and bathroom designer.

Design-Led, Truly Bespoke Furniture

Historically, our work focused on fitted wardrobes, alcove units, bookcases and kitchens, often produced in classic shaker styles and finished to a high spray-painted standard. One of the most valuable aspects of this work was the design process itself — learning how to interpret a client’s needs, assess a space properly and translate ideas into furniture that feels considered, balanced and purposeful.

That same design-led approach now underpins our built-in furniture and bespoke storage solutions within wider interior projects. We specialise in creating one-off, truly bespoke storage that makes intelligent use of awkward or underutilised areas — particularly alcoves, chimney breasts, recesses and irregular spaces that off-the-shelf furniture simply cannot address.

This approach often complements our kitchen design, bathroom installations and overall interior design work, ensuring storage solutions feel intentional rather than retrofitted.

Furniture That Fits — Properly

All of our built-in furniture is made and installed on site, allowing us to respond directly to the realities of the property. Older homes rarely have straight walls or perfectly level floors — and that’s never a problem.

Each cabinet is carefully scribed to the surrounding walls, ensuring the finished furniture is always square, level and visually correct, even when the building itself is not. This is what distinguishes truly fitted furniture from modular or semi-custom alternatives.

The result is storage that looks permanent, integrated and architecturally considered — not furniture that merely fills a gap.

From Contemporary to Character-Led Interiors

We are able to design and supply more contemporary shaker or slab-fronted wardrobes and storage solutions using trusted national suppliers such as Howdens Joinery, alongside carefully selected online manufacturers.

In period properties and character homes, furniture often needs to feel as though it has always belonged there. In these instances, we design and build pieces with a more rustic or heritage-led finish, using traditional detailing and thoughtfully chosen fixtures and fittings.

Where appropriate, we may apply a degree of artistic licence, allowing the furniture to evolve naturally during installation rather than being rigidly defined by drawings. This approach requires trust, but the outcome is furniture that feels authentic, timeless and entirely appropriate to the building — particularly when paired with sympathetic plastering and finishing works.

Finishes & Practical Considerations

While we no longer operate a dedicated spray workshop, bespoke furniture can be hand-painted on site where appropriate, or prepared ready for client decoration. We are always transparent about finish options, timescales and costs, helping clients choose what best suits their project and budget.

What remains consistent is our ability to identify opportunities for storage that others overlook — transforming small niches and unused spaces into highly functional, beautifully integrated solutions.
